orn in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Hemmings aided his high school in winning the state championship in 1966. He later played pro ball in Europe after being recruited to play three seasons in the CIAU, two with Lakehead University and one with the Brandon Bobcats. His one year stint with the Bobcats proved to be successful as he was recognized as both a GPAC first team all-star and Brandon University Male Athlete of the Year.

In 1991, Hemmings was selected to coach Canada‘s National Student team, which won a silver medal in the World University Games. He was also selected by Ken Shields to help coach the Canadian National “Ateam in 9, 0 and 4. The legacy that Hemmings has created at Brandon University is his relentless drive towards building championship contending teams. Over the years, the Brandon University Bobcats have truly built a tradition of excellence.

It was only five years ago that Jerry was recognized as the winningest University coach in the CIAU, as he collected his 500th career win. This past season, Hemmings grabbed win number 734, and was awarded the H.R. (Krug) Crawford Medal. This is the second time Jerry has received this Westman sports achievement since 1982. He was also chosen by the Manitoba Coaches Association as their 1999-2000 Coach of the Year.
